Mt. Iron pair wins 6th annual City Auto Glass Walleye Classic.

(May 23, 2011)…The team of Russ Dahl and Gary Savela from Mt. Iron brought in the winning catch and $10,000 at the 6th annual ‘City Auto Glass Walleye Classic, presented by American Family Insurance’, held on Saturday, May 21st, 2011 out of the Fortune Bay marina on Lake Vermilion.

Dahl and Savela weighed six walleyes totaling 11.69 pounds, including a 27-inch fish that weighed 6.05 pounds. The second-place team of Joe Lorenz from Chisago City and Noah Wendorf from Wyoming brought in the tourney’s biggest fish, at 6.19 pounds, and finished with a total catch of five fish and 10.49 pounds. 3rd place went to Mike McPherson of Macomb, IL and Steve Krasaway of Superior. The pair weighed six walleyes totaling 7.57 pounds.

4th place went to Paul Pollock of Tower and Garett Plotnik from Eveleth, while 5th place was nabbed by last year’s champions, Zach Dagel of Coleraine and Dave LaCoe from Chisholm. For complete tournament results, go to www.cityautoglass.com/walleyeclassic.   

A record 72 teams fished through mild temperatures mixed with a steady drizzle and fairly strong winds. The City Auto Glass Walleye Classic is a catch-and-release tournament, with all fish returned to Lake Vermilion after weigh-in.  

Proceeds from this non-profit event benefit the Kiwanis Club, which uses the funds raised to fund scholarships and other programs that benefit area kids.

May 19, 2012 is the date for next year’s tournament on Lake Vermilion.
